« L’image extractive » est un essai vidéographique sur la photographie.
Fabriquée grâce à des sels d’argent, l’image argentique est appréhendée dans une chaine de production à plusieurs niveaux : l’exploitation minière, le jeu des cours boursiers, la production d’informations (data-mining). L’exploitation minière pose la question de l’aval économique et politique d’une puissance sur des ressources externes à son territoire. Le récit débute avec les premiers grands gisements de l’Amérique colonisée et le mythe du trésor de l’Eldorado. Au tournant du 19ème et du 20ème siècle, la fièvre de la photographie et du cinéma aurait-elle pu se propager sans une grande disponibilité des ressources? Cette époque est aussi le moment où l’étalon-or destitue définitivement l’étalon-argent, faisant du métal une simple matière première, soumise aux fluctuations des marchés boursiers. Dans les années 70, quand l’argent atteint des prix déraisonnables, Kodak lance des recherches pour une photographie qui se passe d’argent et invente le numérique. Le dernier niveau de cette chaine est celui des informations : coûts d’exploitation, estimation des stocks et de la demande, prix de vente et d’achat. La modélisation des données est l’étape indispensable à toute production et permettrait d’anticiper aujourd’hui une raréfaction des ressources. Alors que sur internet fusent les annonces sur l’épuisement de l’argent, Il semble en retourner d’un enjeu « extractiviste », de la sélection plus ou moins pertinente des données appelée « data-mining ». Qu’il s’agisse d’extraction minière donnant jour à une photographie ou de données débouchant sur une image prédictive, le « geste » cognitif parait le même, un geste d’extraction.
“The extractive image” is a video essay on photography.
Analog photographs are manufactured from silver salts, which means that silver photography can be apprehended through a three-level production chain: the extraction industry; the stock markets and their price fluctuations; the data mining processes. The extraction industry is a powerful tool used by countries to obtain economic and political domination over a foreign territory’s natural resources. The story begins with the first great deposits discovered throughout colonised America, giving rise to the myth of the El dorado treasure. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, could photography and cinema have boomed as they did without a widespread availability of resources? This was also when gold definitively took silver’s place as the main currency standard. Silver metal turned back into a mere raw material, subjected to stock market fluctuations. In the 1970s, when silver became unreasonably expensive, Kodak launched a research effort into a new photographic process that would make silver irrelevant. Thus was invented digital photography. The upper level of this chain revolves around information: operating costs, assessment of stock levels and demand, selling and buying prices. Data modelling is the one essential step to any production process, and what would make it possible to anticipate a potential rarefaction of resources. While the Internet brims with oracles about the depletion of silver to come, the challenge in terms of extraction seems to rest upon the notion of data mining, the more or less relevant process of selecting data for a given purpose. It could be that ore extraction will dig out a new kind of photography, or data mining could generate images that display predictive abilities. Whichever way it may go, the cognitive "gesture” appears to be the common denominator. A gesture of extraction.
