A l’heure où l’IA connait un développement sans précédent, la maitrise de la technologie des semi-conducteurs est devenue stratégique dans l’échiquier mondial. Sans les semi-conducteurs, le développement des moteurs des intelligences artificielles ne peut avoir lieu. Sans les semi-conducteurs, pas d’armement de pointe, de mémoire numérique, ni même encore de photographie numérique. Cet essai vidéographique invite à considérer une autre histoire de la photographie, une histoire où la résolution de nos images monte en gamme à mesure que l’industrie asiatique (Japon, Corée du Sud, Taïwan) miniaturises les semi-conducteurs. Mais cette course en avant dans la technologie ne se comprend correctement qu’en regard de son contexte géopolitique et la rivalité opposant Chine et US dans la zone Pacifique. Au Japon, en Corée du Sud et à Taïwan, produire des semi-conducteurs de qualité, c’est aussi affirmer une position forte vis-à-vis de ces puissances. Comment alors ne pas entrelacer l’évolution de nos images avec l’histoire de ces Silicon Islands, de ses guerres et conflits ? Au récit impersonnel des voix générées par IA, y répond celle d’un conteur créole. Ce dernier défie le gigantisme de la mémoire numérique et son flot démesuré d’images, avec les outils de la mémoire orale, la poésie et le chant. Le récit advient au travers de chansons (Nel-K, Seung Hwan Diego Bae, Echo) où se modulent des intonations affectives : on y dit la fierté de résister aux puissants tout autant que le blues mélancolique d’avoir été modelé par eux ; on y rapporte les folies de l’Anthropocène, où Taïwan ne peut délocaliser ses usines dernier cri, considérées comme un « bouclier de Silicium&nbsp;» face à la Chine, usines monopolisant les ressources en eau et en énergie au détriment des besoins de la population. Mais la production de semi-conducteurs continue de s’intensifier. The impersonal narrative of AI-generated voices is countered by that of a Creole storyteller. The latter challenges the gigantism of digital memory and its inordinate flood of images with the tools of oral memory, poetry and song. The story is told through songs (by Nel-K, Seung Hwan Diego Bae, Echo) in which emotional intonations are modulated: the pride of resisting the powerful is expressed as much as the melancholy blues of having been shaped by them; the follies of the Anthropocene are recounted, with Taiwan unable to relocate its state-of-the-art factories, considered a “Silicon shield” against China, monopolizing water and energy resources to the detriment of the population's needs. croissants de notre monde contemporain avec le symbole du serpent à plumes. Pour les civilisations de la Méso-Amérique, le serpent à plumes incarne l’énergie, le souffle, le vent et la pluie céleste. Aujourd’hui, le monde digital ne cesse de monopoliser de plus en plus de ressources énergétiques précipitant encore plus nos sociétés dans le maelström de la crise environnementale. L’engouement pour l’Intelligence artificielle comme catalyseur de productivité mondiale et de croissance va nécessiter toujours plus de données, stockées dans des data-centers voraces en énergie. Les images présentées ici, en évoquant des paysages industriels en ruine du 19ème siècle, annoncent l’effondrement de notre monde. Ce projet cherche à entrer en résonance avec la chute des prestigieuses civilisations de la Méso-Amérique qui avaient su lire dans les astres et anticiper les précipitations pour construire de grandes cités. Pensée de concert avec Chantal Huckert, anthropologue au Musée de Xalapa, cette exposition réunit des pièces choisies dans la collection du musée. Les pièces sélectionnées par Chantal Huckert datent du classique tardif et du postclassique récent et renvoient au serpent à plumes&nbsp;qui symbolise les pouvoirs du souverain, qui domine les forces naturelles en faveur du bien-être des populations, de l’autre de forces destructrices.&nbsp;Ces pièces de la collection du Musée de Xalapa décrivent le serpent à plumes, et le représentent avec le signe des volutes, connues pour figurer la force vitale, et des signes d’eau. Dans le cas d’une figurine féminine, l’ensemble des signes le présente associé au maïs mûr et aux germes. Au centre de l’exposition, sur la longue paroi, Récit iconographique de l’image et de l’énergie est un roman graphique réalisé à partir d’images tirées d’internet ou générée par IA. Ce travail cherche à entrelacer l’histoire technique de nos images photographiques avec le développement des sources énergétiques. La poésie présentée à ses côtés suppose le tarissement des mines mexicaines et la disparition du métal argent, nécessaire à la fabrication de la photographie argentique. Ce texte a fait l’objet d’une interprétation en glyphes mayas par Jean-Michel Hoppan et vient prendre place dans l’imitation d’un codex. Artiste musicien invité, Vincent Guiot propose une sculpture sonore et une performance. La sculpture, CAIRN, est composée d’un ensemble de pierres détentrices d’une mémoire collective. Le spectateur est invité à scanner le QR code des pierres pour accéder aux compositions musicales qui ont été réalisées avec des fragments de vie confiés par des grands-mères, gardiennes de la transmission orale. Pour Vincent Guiot, chaque pierre est le relais de leur parole et témoigne par sa propre voix de son passage sur terre. Ces paroles seront activées lors d’une performance proposée durant le soir du vernissage, nous rappelant la fragilité poétique de la transmission orale face au gigantisme de la mémoire digitale. --- Stories about the generative and destructive power of the feathered serpent, exhibition, 2025 Museum of Anthropology, Xalapa, Mexico This exhibition invites visitors to consider the growing energy needs of our contemporary world alongside the symbol of the feathered serpent. For the civilizations of Mesoamerica, the feathered serpent embodies energy, breath, wind, and heavenly rain. Today, the digital world continues to monopolize more and more energy resources, plunging our societies even further into the maelstrom of the environmental crisis. The craze for artificial intelligence as a catalyst for global productivity and growth will require ever more data, stored in energy-hungry data centers. The images presented here, evoking ruined industrial landscapes of the 19th century, herald the collapse of our world. This project seeks to resonate with the fall of the prestigious civilizations of Mesoamerica, which were able to read the stars and anticipate rainfall in order to build great cities. Conceived in collaboration with Chantal Huckert, anthropologist at the Xalapa Museum, this exhibition brings together selected pieces from the museum's collection. The pieces selected by Chantal Huckert date from the late classical and early postclassical periods and refer to the feathered serpent, which symbolizes the powers of the sovereign, who dominates the forces of nature for the well-being of the people, as opposed to destructive forces. These pieces from the Xalapa Museum collection depict the feathered serpent, representing it with the sign of volutes, known to represent the life force, and signs of water. In the case of a female figurine, the set of signs presents it associated with ripe corn and sprouts. At the center of the exhibition, on the long wall, Iconographic Narrative of Image and Energy is a graphic novel created from images taken from the internet or generated by AI. This work seeks to intertwine the technical history of our photographic images with the development of energy sources. The poetry presented alongside it suggests the depletion of Mexican mines and the disappearance of silver metal, necessary for the production of silver photography. This text has been interpreted in Mayan glyphs by Jean-Michel Hoppan and takes its place in the imitation of a codex. Guest musician Vincent Guiot presents a sound sculpture and performance. The sculpture, CAIRN, is composed of a collection of stones that hold a collective memory. Viewers are invited to scan the QR code on the stones to access musical compositions created from fragments of life entrusted by grandmothers, guardians of oral tradition. For Vincent Guiot, each stone relays their words and bears witness to their passage on earth with its own voice. Elle apportent une valeur-ajoutée aux usagers du cyber espace. Elles sont devenues ressource vitale pour les DAO, ces communautés fédérées sur internet. Et nous nous dirigeons vers une production toujours accrue de données. Le data-déluge n’est pas loin… L’image photo-réaliste semble irrémédiablement prise dans les mailles d’un filet économique et dans son injonction à la croissance. The data-deluge is not far off... The photo-realistic image seems irremediably caught in the meshes of an economic net and its injunction to growth. This is the hypothesis proposed by Daphné Le Sergent. Data are already marketable commodities for GAFAMs, and the object of economic transactions. What if financial speculation on information were to flourish? What if an information crash were to occur? The images proposed here evoke collapses, past civilizations of which all we are left with are the ruins. Le premier prend la forme d’un faux documentaire généré par une Intelligence Artificielle sur les Mayas. &nbsp;Le second prend les allures d’un tutoriel sur internet, encourageant à spéculer sur les flux de données. Mais les deux histoires convergent. Elles abordent toutes deux la question de la gestion des ressources et de la croissance des communautés. Pour les Mayas, il s’agit de l’eau et des rituels destinés au dieu de la pluie, Chaac. Pour nous, ce sont les données et de leur capacité à permettre un déploiement optimisé de l’économie mondiale. Ce travail s’appelle « l’Image spéculative&nbsp;». «Spéculative&nbsp;» car il est malaisé de démêler le vrai du faux comme face à des images photo-réalistes générées par AI. Et finalement, qu’importe que ces images soient vraies ou fausses par rapport à la réalité. Ce qui compte, c’est la plus-value qu’elles apportent à leurs utilisateurs (convaincre, optimiser, magnifier).
